green plastic factory

solution for difficult to recycle plastic

The Green Plastic Factory offers a unique solution for plastics that are difficult to process, low-quality mixes and foil plastics. These plastics cannot be separated optimally, are sometimes contaminated and are therefore normally incinerated. This concerns about half of the plastic packaging waste in the Netherlands.

These plastics are given a new life in the factory. This prevents combustion and reduces CO2 emissions. In this way we contribute to the environment and discarded plastic becomes valuable again. The surplus of plastic waste is linked to the increasing demand on the housing market. This way a local problem is used as a solution.

show that it’s possible

This is a pilot factory that starts with a smaller quantity. The factory is scalable and the capacity is adjusted accordingly when demand increases. Not only is there production, but the raw materials are also processed in-house. This combination is unique in the recycling segment. This also serves as an example for other cities and areas in Europe and the world.

collaboration pays off

Municipalities and save plastics work closely together to close the waste cycle. In particular, the plastics that are ‘difficult’ to recycle (mix plastics) do not find their way into recycling. And that gave us the drive to do something about it. Thanks to co-financing from the European Interreg project Transfor-CE, the foundation of the Green Plastic Factory was laid in 2020. An innovative set-up where residual-mix plastic is melted down into products for the outdoor space and housing. On the Cirwinn site and in close cooperation with the municipality of Almere, the province of Flevoland and 14 other partners, spread over 4 countries, hundreds of tons of plastic have been saved from the incinerator in this way and used in the outdoor area. This creates a regional circular economy and it is scalable. We are grateful to the municipality of Almere and all regional partners for the innovation collaboration so that the green plastic factory can continue to grow in other regions. Next stop: Arnhem.

transform-ce project

The Green Plastic Factory was part of the Transform-CE project from 2019 to 2023. Transform-CE recognizes that recycling and reusing plastic has multiple benefits. It prevents new plastic from being made and ensures increased reuse of plastic waste at a local level, so that export of waste no longer takes place. Transform-CE is supported by the Interreg North West Europe program as part of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
